I have only just discovered this style of reel from ABU Garcia, Diplomat 420, in the mid eighties. It is believed that a bigger brother exists called either a Diplomat 430 or 450 , presumably a larger spooled and capacity reel.
The reel has no gearing so therefore is 1:1 ratio. It is believed to be used for floating baits free-spool downstream as is called uptide?? Does this mean one fishes from uptide position in order to float a live - bait or maybe wet fly down the current?
I would be pleased for a more informed person collector to share with us.
More to follow I'm sure.....
Well my friend Christian has come to the rescue. He has confirmed the existence of another Mooching reel made by ABU-Garcia.
It is the Diplomat 450 as suggested above but capacity has not been determined due to markings being removed. No known mention in Tight Lines Catalogs but it is bigger than the 420 which I own (linked above)
This is a BIG reel! Postscript , I now have one of these reels. Anyone heard of more than the 2 documented here?

Christian writes:
I think the 450 cost me about 20-25 Euro without shipping (eBay), but
thatīs what my memory tells me, Iīm pretty sure, just not 100 %. It was
advertised as a salmon fly reel, at the moment I canīt tell why it possibly
canīt be used for that purpose. Size and weight maybe?
The 450 is NIB, the box is out of shape, the capacity can be seen (not on
the pics, but Iīm to blame for that :-) ) :
440 m 0,45 mm or 675 m 0,35 mm
or
490 yards 25 lbs or 710 yards 17 lbs
Independent drag system
Graphite spool and frame
So is there an undocumented model Diplomat 430 out there
somewhere??
If you have any others listed above ie Diplomat 430 or 450, that are unneeded or doubles in your collection and are available for a reasonable fee, I would be very pleased to hear from you. I cannot afford to collect Mint, in-box or unused reels at present, until my children have completed their education.
