Vic McCristal was my childhood hero who  was interested in ABU's fine reels as well as rods and lures, but here in Oz not all the product line available. I saw my first ABU Speedlock pistol grip rod, the wonderful 662 ABU Diplomat double handed baitcaster here in this article. I was not until 5 years later I bought one in London. I still have it and the rest of the Diplomat range of premium ABU rods of the day!

  

My favourite baitcasting rods sported  single or double handed Speedlock grips.

One however could not help but appreciate the fine workmanship in the full range of  ABU Diplomat rods.

I was so impressed with these grips, i waited six months to have one of the first Fenwick Graphite blanks imported into Australia by Jack Erskine in Cairns Qld.

This rod is still fishing some 30 years later!
