Significant ABU Friends

Uffe Edefuhr

Uffe Edefur , an ever helpful mate  from Sweden and with a long time, approaching 12 year friendship  now , is about to spend several weeks holidaying with my family  and fishing with my mates and I. (He  has been subjected to my poor  interview at bottom of screen  here ....  )

He was born in Stockhom and as a youth he spent a lot of time on his  grand parents farm and later moved to the south of Sweden. Fishing and ABU came to him early in life, not realizing that much later he would live close to the Morrum and the home of ABU at Svangsta.

We have established a 'mateship' and rest of life friendship over many years and most especially over the 2 weeks we fished, ate, drank and told stories socializing  together!

The big difference this time, we will be without our beloved Fintan who passed since Uffe last visited,; he passed away on 27th February 2016. Fintan RIP,  so loved the reparte he had with Uffe and looked forward to the conversations as much as I looked forward to the fishing. Sadly missed by all who knew him.

Part 6

All packed and ready to go, car to Copenhagen and Singapore Airlines to Singapore and Brisbane. First sighting of Western Australian coastline around Exmouth. Nice steady shot here with great detail of roads, ports and potential fishing spots!

This time he visits steel guitar mate Jeff Spencer who he became friends with a few years ago in Dublin Steel Guitar Meeting.

Next to be dropped at Portside on Brisbane River to connect with Art, Jon and I for our PNG trip.

Above Uffe leaving Sweden, first view of Western Australian coastline this trip.
Below Map of our first PNG port Alotau.

An enjoyable time was had onboard Pacific Jewel , in terms od music, entainment and dining but it was less than exciting when we went vising at the 3 out of 5 expected ports.

Meals and last dinner and sunset

Still very disappointed in PO cutting 2 of our expected ports from the program.

Return via Gladstone where we fishing from our two  smaller tinnies in various spots  around Gladstone.

Fish caught were catfish only and returned to live another day.

Local trips to Keppel Islands and out to Fairburn Dam and also local estuaries followed our trip to PNG.

Leaving on a jet-plane again!

Part 5

Uffe is due to arrive here on Sunday the 3rd September, 2017.

All preparations for fishing are done, boat fuelled and in good order, tackle made up, bait sourced, just waiting for the arrival and of course as always good weather. Intentions are to visit the usual haunts as well as go further afield, both north and south and east.

Uffe advises that all the ABU rods and a soon  to be treasured  Norwegian Asbjorn Horgard Threadline
split cane rod,  sold by ABU for just one year in the 1951 N&N as well as 12 kg of assoerted lures, reels etc are safely with him. Excitement levels are rising for both of us.

Uffe arrived at 10:30 am and we had a full day of catching up, first with fishing mate Art at the airport, then with my wife Anne and my Dad sharing lunch for Father's Day. Upon arriving home at Lammermoor, some hours were spent looking around to see what had changed over the last 2 years, undoing about 12 kgs of ABU rods, reels, lures, paperwork and other Record/ABU paraphernalia.

On the way home we called to have lunch with my Dad, 89 year old Cliff Real who lives at his retirement village, as it was Father's Day and Uffe knows him well.

Our efforts to collect yabbies for tomorrow's fishing trip up the beach was successful at Ross creek.

Windy weather, so first outing was by Art's Cruiser up to Sandy Point 18 km north or Yeppoon.
Fishing requires sustinence, this case being some snags!

After anchoring in 1.6 m of water on main Beach GKI, we found ourselves stranded after just 2 hours, requiring an extended snorkle and coral viewing
Some ciders helped with the unintended delay.

Heading up to Shoalwater Bay, Cape Manifold , Perforated and Flat Island saw some adventures with whales.

We were at anchor on Tuesday night and a humback whale dragged across our anchor line and pulled us through the water at our Flat Island anchorage.
Other issue with a failed sonar, causing battery drain, necessitated us calling the Coastguard for the first time ever, to get the big diesel in our ARVOR Ambassadeur started. As the tow line was attached to pull us away from the cliffs and into deep water, a pod of whales came between us and the Coastguard boat. The lead whale hit the towline and it (fortunately) hit the line which slid up over its head and all the way along its back. The other whales dived below missing the line. No further issues were experienced getting home under our own steam.
The big cod and other fish were forgotten for some time during this excitement!

Fish, cod, Railway Perch and fried rice onboard at Flat Island.

Other fishing happened at....

40 Acre Paddock

Outer Rock and Square Rocks/Ross's Reef

Full of potential but nothing on offer to catch this time...

Double Heads/Boat Harbour

Cooraman Creek Timbers land based area by 4 wheel drive

The southern island chain from Quartz Rock, Girt Island, Divided, Pelican, Mother McGregor and headlands on the way north to Rosslyn Bay.

Part 4

Uffe is due to arrive here on Monday the 28th September, 2015.

Preparations are afoot with my 3 tubes of Record and ABU rods (weighing 12kg)  making the journey with him.

No doubt the suitcase is filled with reels, lures etc so hopefully he has enough room for a Tee Shirt, shorts and a pair of undies (otherwise he will be going commando when here!)

Laden down with 12kg of Vintage Record and ABU rods as well as 4/5 kg of other ABU items, he survived the trip out!

Uffe arrived and seemed to have left again in what seemed a blink of the eye,  after 12 very enjoyable days.

Emirates was comfortable and efficient but the last 5 hour wait from midnight arrival in Brisbane, required some Jamiesons and Crisps to bring on a stuporous rest while waiting for the last flight to Rocky.

As usual the days and nights revolved around fishing a variety of locations, attending to minor boat maintence,  much eating, drinking, telling stories, listening to live music, 4 WDriving to more remote locations, taking photographs, and meeting old friends again. Even a bit of vintage fishing using my as new ABU Pacific and ABU 20 IGFA reel.

Fishing locations were as far afield as the Military sea territory around and north of Manifold Island (this was done first as the NOTMAR rules indicated imminent closure of the area due to war games by Singapore Armed Forces)  , Double Rocks, Flat (overnighting here on a marathon 31 hour sea trip)  and Perferated Island along with The Pinnacles, Baron and Child, Conical Is Rocks, Ross's Reef .

When the sea was not conducive  to boating when fished Cooraman Creek, The Causway Estuary and Run-through, Fishing Creek  around Sandy Point. An attempt was made to get to Nine Mile beach, Stockyard Point and five Rocks.

Five Rocks journey

Sandy Point and Causeway Run-through

Uffe added many more species to take his Aussie total over 4 fishing holidays to be 50+ species now.
Not all legal but still great fun for him to catch and release.
We had copious Spannish Mackeral, Bluetooth, Flathead, Hussar, Cod to eat. Other species wewre Salt and Pepper Trevally, Striped Sea Perch, Wrasses, Fusileer, Grass Sweetlip, Barracuda, Blue-barred Parrotfish, Sharks, Remora and lovely displays from Whales and Dolphins, Turtles , Flying fish and seabirds like Sea Eagles, Brahminy Kites and various diving birds.

More to appear when time permits....

Part 3

Uffe's upcoming fishing trip to us in Central Queensland

September 2013

Very much looking forward to his arrival on the 13th September. Of course laden down with more ABU items which you will soon see here. Anticipating some co-operative fish and good weather. Well the long wait is over and Uffe has arrived for his 15 day sojourn, fishing, eating, drinking and being a tourist.

Due to unavoidable circumstances, we were soon fishing BUT  to land-fish for the first 4 or 5 days but this did not stop Uffe catching a fine Grunter of 1.5 kg and a rarer Butterfish at Cooraman Creek.

Other locations included Double Heads, Causeway Lake and Estuary

Of course fisho's get hungry too, some memorable Spanish Mackeral and hot chips!

Trips to sea included Barren and Child Islands, Hannah's Reef, Findlay's Reef, Conical Rocks, Pleasant Island and the most productive trip 55km north to Cape Manifold.

Most sea trips were early starts, 3am to 4am and home in early afternoon to clean up. Early to bed each night to ready for next outing.

Questions, questions , questions...

When were you aware of fish to be caught ? Sea, lake or  river?

As young as 6 or 7 years, and on freshwater river and  lakes.

Tell me about your earliest fishing experiences?

Older brothers provided the interest by catching and bringing home fish  and I was envious of their catches.

How soon were you are of ABU as a fishing tackle manufacturer?

I guess this interest came by it self. In the spring as a kid I was first in line to get the Napp & Nytt from the sport shop. It was a day of joy when the N&N was in my hand. I could read it thousands of times, dreaming of all the beautiful baits and reels.

First rod/reel?

Record 1600 casting reel, Record 2 steel rod. Also given a Roddymatic , a Japanese reel when young.

Favourite fishing reel/rod ?

As a child of eleven, my first serious reel was a Abumatic 120 on an old ABU 82 fibreglass rod. Was given to me as a Christmas present.

Did you upgrade or keep older fishing equipment?

Always got better one, collecting came much later. When I found older baits I always collected them on a board on the wall.

Do you practice different types of fishing? Fly, spin, pimple ice- jigging, baitcast, deep sea?

Will fish all types ways. Champion in Southern Sweden for ice –fishing in 1996

Memorable experiences?

Catching my biggest Pike of >10kgs. My first was just 200g when I was 9 years of age.  Likewise many Perch when 9 also.

Collecting When you started , ....

I was about 12/13 years when i started collecting Baits, but it was not until the 80’s that i started seriously collecting all ABU /Record items.

You were in my mind the BEST ABU collector but gave the interest  away and now support guys like myself. Why ?

Something happened to my collecting mind when I first got my collection of N&N together. It was a sad thing as I remember it. What should I then collect? Nowadays I think it’s nice to help other persons practicing my old hobby. As being a Swede I have had the opportunity to find nice older Swedish made fishing gear like ABU.
